St. Joseph County Commissioners support application for grant to expand Cade Lake County Park

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution supporting an application from the St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation Commission for a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) grant to expand Cade Lake County Park near Sturgis.

The action by county commissioners during their meeting on Tuesday (July 15th) shows their support for the application to purchase the 40-acre parcel south of the park.

The appraised value of the property is $100,000 and the resolution indicates the county will commit to pay 30 percent of the acquisition cost – $30,000. The amount requested from the MNRTF will be $70,000.

Parks and Recreation Director John Pence said the property includes approximately 18 acres of upland and 22 acres with a variety of wetlands. He said the expansion will provide park visitors with more room, a little more access to Cade Lake, and a variety of wildlife activities.
