Michigan’s iconic Mackinac Bridge was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Thursday (August 12th). The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has posted a video news release of the dedication ceremony to the MDOT YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/MichiganDOT.
The Thursday morning ceremony at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace involved members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) and MDOT. For a direct link to the video, click here.
ASCE established its historic civil engineering designation program in 1964 to recognize and encourage preservation of landmarks, as well as promote historical awareness of civil engineering. To date, more than 200 projects worldwide have earned this prominent designation.
The Mackinac Bridge is currently the third-longest suspension bridge in the world and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere. More information about the bridge can be found online at www.mackinacbridge.org.
