2011 Edward “Coach” T. Johnson and Patricia Johnson Scholarship awarded

THREE RIVERS, Mich.: Caroline Foura and Hilary Skalski have been selected to receive the 2011 Edward “Coach” T. Johnson and Patricia Johnson Scholarship.  Both recipients will graduate from Three Rivers High School on June 3, 2011, and will receive $500 towards the cost of tuition, books, and fees.

Melissa Bliss, Hilary Skalski & Caroline Foura

Foura, the daughter of Carl and Julia Foura, has been accepted at Ferris State University where she will pursue a degree in pre-pharmacy.  She is a junior at Three Rivers High School and ranked 2nd in the graduating class.  She has earned a 4.083 G.P.A. and enough credits to be included with the graduating class of 2011.  Foura’s high school achievements include Honor Roll, 2010 Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship, National Society for High School Scholars, and National Honor Society.  Throughout high school she was actively involved in volleyball, basketball, tennis, and golf.  Foura also spent her time volunteering and coaching middle school and grade school students within the community.

Skalski, the daughter of Felix and Jean Skalski, is also part of the 2011 Three Rivers High School graduating class.  Her career goals include enrollment at Grand Valley State University and the Frederick Meijer Honors College where she will pursue a degree in occupational therapy.  Skalski has earned a 4.026 G.P.A. and is ranked 18th in her class.  Her high school career includes involvement in advanced academics, athletics, and numerous extracurricular activities.  Skalski was a member of the National Honor Society, cross country, golf and tennis team as well as a member of the marching band, pep band and symphony band.

In memory of Edward “Coach” Johnson, his family established this scholarship to recognize scholar athletes in basketball and golf.  Coach Johnson built upon his athletic success to become an outstanding educator and coach.  He was an honored member of the United States Army, and graduated from Hillsdale College before he began his coaching and teaching career at Three Rivers High School.  Coach Johnson dedicated his life to serving the youth in Three Rivers.  He spent over thirty years coaching basketball, golf, track and football.  In 1987, Coach Johnson was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  During that time he also served as the Athletic Director for 10 years and assistant junior high school principal for 9 years.  Coach Johnson was a highly recognized educator and coach within the community and he touched the lives of many.  His legacy continues through the Edward “Coach” T. Johnson and Patricia Johnson Scholarship.
