James Baker, director of the Clean Water Plant in Three Rivers, issued the following ‘Clean Water Plant Odor Press Release’ early Tuesday afternoon (January 10th):
Citizens residing in the Third District may be experiencing increased odors from the Clean Water Plant. As wind speed and direction change the location of those impacted by the odor will change. The source of the odor is from the start up of the digesters. The digesters were shut down to allow for the transport of treated biosolids offsite. Treated biosolids were hauled offsite to allow for the repair of the centrifuge. The centrifuge has since been repaired.
As the digesters are started back up increased odors are given off at reduced operating temperatures. The operating temperature must be slowly increased to prevent damage to equipment and to prevent a run away reaction and foam over. The odors should subside within a few days to a week. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause our citizens.
Respectfully Submitted,
James J. Baker
