Probably the biggest event of the year, Water Festival, is two weeks away. It seems that it was only a month ago that the first committee meeting was held to start planning it. Now, the parade entrants are all in, and the packets are ready for pick-up. The car show is ready for nice weather, and it won’t be long before the Midway will be busy with the carnival workers setting up the rides. The Lions Club began planning for the Ox Roast last January, and soon the old hospital parking lot will be buzzing with activity as patrons line up for an ox roast sandwich, ham and bean soup, a pickle, and a cold beverage. Lion members will be there living up to their motto, “WE SERVE”.
It takes a lot of volunteers to make the Water Festival successful and a family event that we all look forward to every year. The one thing about volunteers is that you can never have too many. Such is the case with volunteers to assist with the parade staging. At 7 P.M., Thursday, June 14, the parade steps off from the intersection of West Michigan and Douglas Avenues. There is still a need for volunteers to assist in staging the parade entrants. With approximately 80 entries, there is a need for at least 15 people to make sure the entrants are in the right spot at the right time and that, when the signal is given, they move with a purpose. The parade draws a lot of spectators and really is the event that kicks off Water Festival. “Ahoy TR” is this year’s theme, so it should be an exciting parade to watch. While on the subject of Water Festival and the parade, here are a few words of advice. Please control your children. Make sure they stay out of the street and away from the parade entrants. There will be ambulances in the parade. Please don’t put them to work because your child ran into the street for a piece of candy. Most importantly, have a great time and don’t mark your viewing area with litter. If you make a mess, pick up after yourself.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department will conduct Boater Safety Classes on several Saturdays during the month of June, with one in July. The first class will be held at the Colon Fire Department, Saturday, June 2, from 9 to 3 P.M. The remaining classes will be held at the Sheriff’s Training Room in Centreville on June 16, 23, 30, and July 7. All classes will run from 9 to 3 P.M. The classes are open to anyone age 12 or older. The St. Joseph County Commission on Aging will host a PATH (Personal Action Toward Health) workshop every Tuesday evening through June 12, at their location, 103 South Douglas, Three Rivers. This FREE session will run from 5:30 to 8 P.M.

The company took this precautionary measure because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. There have been no dog illnesses reported so far. The Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy invites everyone to its 124-acre Spirit Springs Sanctuary, near Marcellus, on Saturday, June 9, from 10 A.M. to noon, to celebrate the grand opening of this natural area preserve. Peter Ter Louw, executive director, is quoted as saying, “We’re celebrating the grand opening of a place that is a feast for the senses. As you walk through the preserve, you get a taste for the interesting variation of tree and plant communities throughout the site. Depending on the time of year and the time of day you visit, you will have an entirely unique experience of colors, sights, and sounds.” Guided tours will be available, along with plenty of off-street parking.
