DOWAGIAC – The Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees reviewed the progress of two college construction projects, approved the Board meeting calendar for 2013, and announced a new transfer agreement with Western Michigan University during the Board’s regular meeting Monday evening (December 17) on the Dowagiac campus.
Renovation of the space formerly occupied by the local history museum into a new college bookstore, an expanded community meeting room, and an alumni welcome center and college history gallery is also on schedule, with a planned completion date in mid-February. A building rededication and grand opening of the new bookstore has been scheduled for March 11, 2013. Immediately following the bookstore relocation, renovation work will begin in the “old” bookstore space to create a new one-stop service center for students. In turn, this new service location will be open for the summer of 2013.
A new transfer agreement with Western Michigan University (WMU) was announced at the meeting that will enable SMC students to transfer directly into the Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering at WMU. “This newest partnership complements the articulation agreements already in place with WMU and other universities and provides yet another opportunity for our students to continue their education towards a four-year degree,” said SMC President Dr. David Mathews.”
This newest partnership between SMC and WMU’s Department of Manufacturing Engineering comes on the heels of the announcement last month by the board of another agreement between SMC and Ferris State University to offer a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice on SMC’s campus.
