Kalamazoo, MI – Michigan WORKS! recently announced the schedule of workshops to assist job seekers for the month of January at the Kalamazoo and Three Rivers Michigan WORKS! Service Centers. The workshops are designed to address a number of issues job seekers are facing in today’s tight job market. In her recommendation to other job seekers, Mary Ann Bush, a previous attendee of the Employability Skills workshop stated, “Having taken other classes from Michigan Works, I feel that the Employability Skills class brought them all together. Besides the improvement to my resume and cover letter I have experienced great value in the use of STAR stories (Situation, Tasks, Actions, Results) and the networking business card. In one of my interviews I was able to use the examples I had prepared in class with a confidence that I had refined the response to be most descriptive and impacting.”
Another workshop, The Mature Job Seeker, was extremely popular in December and is being repeated on January 9 at the Kalamazoo Service Center. Attendee, Dennis Gibbs stated, “If we can find ways to convince a potential employer that we can help their business operate more productively, efficiently, and provide better service to their customers, we should be able to convince an employer that we can be a smart addition to their team.”
Additional workshop topics include: Computer Basics, Interviewing Tips, Effective Resumes, Veterans Employment, Identifying Your Marketable Skills, Job Corp Orientation, WorkKeys Testing, Networking and Technology, Affordable Housing Options, Michigan Works Orientation, and Repair Your Credit/Organize Your Life. Workshops range from one to three hours in length and are scheduled at various days and times throughout the month; some are offered more than once. Class size is limited; therefore, reservations are required and can be made by calling 269-383-2536 in Kalamazoo and 269-273-2717 in Three Rivers. Walk-ins are welcome if there is available space.
