It’s that time of year where we are all about to fall short of our New Year’s resolutions to be more active/get outdoors/do something for our environment.  Well, just in the nick of time there is a Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy (SWMLC) workday!  The workday will take place Saturday (January 12th) from 9 a.m. until noon.

Come embrace the wintry outdoors with fellow nature-fans at Spirit Springs Sanctuary just south of Marcellus.  We’ll start off with a brisk walk to the orange trail on the way to one of my favorite spots on the preserve – “Carol’s Oak Peninsula”  (See accompanying map).

Some of the best oak woodland understory of the preserve is found on this peninsula into the wetlands.  Some selective thinning of encroaching brush and small trees will allow this area of sedges and hepatica to thrive.  Winter is a great time for this kind of work because you can utilize layers to moderate your heat levels to personal comfort and there are no mosquitoes or deer flies!

Please RSVP via email or phone (269-324-1600) for directions and so we know how much hot chocolate to bring!  We welcome you to bring your own hand saws and/or loppers, but we will have extra tools to share.  Remember to dress for the weather!

Happy New Year!
