Post Commander Ralph Karcher said the Legion has had the derby for over 30 years.

Free Fishing Weekend is June 8th and 9th in Michigan, and fishing license fees are waived.

Retired St. Joseph County Probate Judge Thomas Shumaker attended the event.  Shumaker and several officials from the St. Joseph County Courthouse donate items to the derby.  “The court’s been helping with Free Fishing Weekend for 15 years.  Kids can fish for free until they’re 17.  We like to invite the parents and children to fish when it’s free to all.  Make it a family thing,” Shumaker said.
