Pergolas from North Main Street

Pergolas are now in place at the North Main Street and Railroad Drive entrances to the reconstructed ‘Mural Mall’ in downtown Three Rivers.

The structures – components of the new design for the pedestrian walkway and gathering spot connecting the two streets – were installed Tuesday (June 18).

“Meet Me at the Mall”, a grand re-opening celebration is set for Thursday, July 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.  The event will include a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony at the intersection of Portage Avenue and North Main Street at 5:45 p.m.

In addition to reconstruction of the Mural Mall, the $940,000 project has brought lighting and sidewalk improvements in the downtown area.

The bulk of the funding for the project is from a $750,000 Downtown Infrastructure Grant (DIG) awarded to the City of Three Rivers in 2012.

Still to come as a feature of the Mural Mall is free Wi-Fi provided by Frontier Communications.  According to Christy Trammell, Executive Director of the Three Rivers Downtown Development Authority, “It will be installed in the next few weeks with no password.”

    Just one person’s observation –
The pergolas at the Mural Mall on Railroad Drive draw your attention, that something is happening towards Main Street.
But, the pergolas at Main Street, being buried in the void, do leave questions?
Could the money have been better spent, continuing the revised Main Street brickwork onto Portage Avenue back of the Carnegie Center, and continuing the historic style street lights on both sides of Main Street to the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches?

Free wi-fi from Frontier? No wi-fi is free. Someone pays for it. So who is footing the bill?

  3. During the Three Rivers Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Board meeting on May 31st, DDA Executive Director Christy Trammell reported briefly on the ‘WiFi for the Mural Mall’ matter. She said, “There’s been an addition to the project and that is – Frontier Communications has stepped up and they are going to be providing WiFi in the Mural Mall and that will be a free service to the DDA so that’s supposed to be going in there as well.” And she added, “It’s a nice sitting area to have the WiFi.”
